5 Hotels for Business Travelers on Extended Trips

Hotels are improving their amenities for business travelers, especially for road warriors who are seeking efficiency, easy access and comfortable work areas for extended trips.

One of the top priorities for people traveling on an extended trip is the quality of the work space, such as having enough outlets and a desk thatis large enough to hold their computer, phone and paperwork, said April Masini, a New York-based relationship and etiquette expert and author.

"The work space in a hotel room is always key for me," she said. "There has to good lighting and enough of it. I also like it when there's a comfortable lounging area that I can use for reading or entertaining."

On longer trips, Masini seeks accommodations thatfeel more like home and less like an institution.

"A mini fridge that's stocked with my favorite foods and beverages is a plus," she said.

The location, room size and amenities are always the top three priorities for long-term business travelers, said Andy Abramson, CEO of Comunicano, a Del Mar, Calif.-based marketing communications company, who travels an average of 200 days a year. Newer hotels are a favorite, because they tend to have more modern amenities than conventional full-service hotels.

"Proximity to full service and fast casual restaurants and being nearby to pharmacies, supermarkets and convenience stores are important, as there isn't always a 24-hour restaurant on the premises," he said. "They tend to have more of a breakfast and dinner hour set up and that doesn't always correspond to when I'll be hungry or on property."

Being close to a dry cleaner and a laundry is a bonus, since not all hotels offer those services seven days as week, Abramson said.

One bedroom suites are preferable over studios, so "you're not trapped in your bedroom," he said.

"Being able to walk into the kitchen, open the refrigerator and grab some bottled water or juice is also a big plus, as you can stock up and keep working without having to take a break or pay for over priced room service," Abramson said.

Since business travelers spend a large amount of their time working, really fast, reliable WiFi comes first along with good cell phone reception, he said.

"The last two amenities are a flat screen TV with open HDMI ports," Abramson said. "This way I can connect my Google Chromecast to it and use my iPad or iPhone and stream what I want to watch versus the limited channels most hotels have."

The perk that is paramount to Abramson is being able to check out later to accommodate for meetings or a different schedule.

"It's an amenity I have from Intercontinental as a Royal Ambassador and I do stay in some as long as week at a time and being able to show up whenever is great when you have a red eye arrival," he said. "A late check out is well worth the price of the rooms - they allow me until 4 p.m. without question,and I've stayed as late as 8 p.m. without the extra night being charged."

Here are five hotels thatare popular among business travelers who are on extended trips:

Located in Manhattan's Hudson Square and NoMad, these two boutique hotels opened in 2016 and tout their small modular rooms as efficient. While the average size of each Arlo Hotel room is only 150-square feet, travelers can still ask for a queen or king-sized bed thathave two USB outlets in the headboard and still have room to store their luggage and work at their flip-down desk thatcontains another USB outlet.

The hotel encourages travelers to work at its communal tables, which are located everywhere on the premises. At the Arlo Hudson Square, the open spaces have Wifi available atits rooftop bar, library, courtyard, living room setting, and indoor bar. The option to use its check-in kiosks and app make it easy for road warriors arriving at unconventional times. The empty refrigerators also allow road warriors to stock it with their own breakfast items or snacks.

"Both Arlo properties were created with the business traveler in mind," said Jenny Robinson, director of business travel of Arlo Hotels. "The 'pantry' gives guests a choice of one-of-a-kind items that they can enjoy in their room without paying the industry-standard three time mark-up of a traditional mini bar."

With locations in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and London, the AKA hotels meld a luxury condo with a boutique hotel feeling and offer studios, one and two bedroom options. With high end furnishings, the rooms have large, full-size kitchens, long desks and the option to do laundry.

"AKA caters to the working needs of business travelers and feature complimentary conference rooms, business centers, work stations outfitted with computers, printers, and monitors, high-speed Wi-Fi, same-day valet dry cleaning and laundering services and an on-site laundry room," said Jenna Arin, managing director of AKA Wall Street. "Rather than room service, AKA provides travelers with fully equipped kitchens - making it convenient to prepare meals throughout your stay."

With 19 locations, the AC Hotels Marriott have a boutique atmosphere and are appealing to business travelers because of free Wifi, rooms thatcontain several USB outlets at the bed and desk and restaurant kallpods, which are electronic devices that have Bluetooth technology and allow guests to alert the servers when they are ready to be approached. Road warriors can thus conduct business meetings in the lounge without being interrupted by servers. When they want to order food and drinks, they can utilize the kallpods.

"The AC Hotel Chicago Downtown rooms have hardwood floors, luggage benches, allow you to access your personal Netflix account on the in-room television and complimentary bottled water in the mini fridges in each room," said Chris Zarek, general manager of AC Hotel Chicago Downtown. "We have high-speed internet because guests expect that."

Sutton Court Hotel Residences is a boutique style, extended-stay hotel located in Midtown Manhattan. The rooms are 600 square feet and the newly remodeled apartments feature large round tables in the apartment and double as a work station and/or a dining table and are "ideal for business travelers looking for a home away from home," said Katiria Astorga, assistant general manager.

Business travelers also have a direct landline, a fully equipped kitchen and DirectTV with HBO.

"Our apartments are more than a room with a view," she said.

Located globally and in 19 states, the Hotel Indigos are owned by the InterContinental Hotels Group. The Hotel Indigo Lower East Side in Manhattan offers complimentary Wi-Fi, a 14th floor sky lobby with spacious work stations and a marketplace where local snacks are sold.

"What makes Hotel Indigo Lower East Side different is the focus on being inclusive and welcoming to both guests and non-guests," said Tania Getzova, general manager. "The 14th floor workspace is open to locals to use as their workspace and they continue to use our space as a creative atmosphere to get work done and network with other likeminded individuals."

East Fork Pottery Is Redefining Sustainable Businessone Bowl at a Time
There are probably few 21st-century business owners who can say that the spiritual foundation for their factory is based on the utopian thinking of William Morris and John Ruskin—artists and theorists who believed that craft should come before quantity, that art should be affordable and handmade, and that where you make a thing should be as important as the thing you’re making. But for married couple Connie and Alex Matisse, this idealistic philosophy is a large part of why their East Fork Pottery has been wildly successful. “Our company serves our employees and community as much as our customers,” says Connie. “Making pottery won’t necessarily be in our mission, but it’s what we do to support our mission,” adds Alex.That sincerity has struck a deep chord among East Fork’s clientele, allowing the Asheville, North Carolina–based company to open two new retail stores (one locally; one in Atlanta) in the past year, and it’s why the company’s Instagram account—featuring mostly dinnerware—has more than 70,000 followers. It sells 5,000 pieces of pottery every month.East Fork recently took its biggest leap of faith to date. After nine years on a former tobacco farm in North Carolina’s Madison County, the Matisses moved their production, marketing, and shipping headquarters to Asheville’s Biltmore neighborhood last fall. The new factory will allow East Fork to increase its production capacity by 800 percent by 2020. As a whole, the company is planning for 300 percent growth in the next two years. With the help of friends from Shelter Design Studio, they transformed 14,500 square feet of leased industrial space into an “organism,” with a clearly defined factory floor and start-up–style office area, as well as a commercial kitchen and a 30-foot-long dining table, where the staff eat lunch together. On the wish list is space for a day care.Already, Alex can see a day in the near future when East Fork will outgrow the factory and need to move again. (The Matisses have even had preliminary—okay, maybe premature—conversations with Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta about a permanent home.)East Fork’s streamlined products are particularly appealing. House-made glazes in muted earth and jewel tones often reveal speckles of iron from the North Carolina clay. Hand-thrown and jigger-pressed bowls and plates, with fluid forms and low profiles, have a satisfying heft but aren’t clunky. The website also sells facial oil and a brass glockenspiel: What more do you need for retreating from public life and into a cabin in the woods with close friends and stew?East Fork happens to be peaking at a time when ceramics are, well, hot. Connie says she saw the trend growing about eight years ago, when ceramics shops popped up on Etsy and the fashion world began to collaborate with certain makers in Los Angeles and Brooklyn. The relatively accessible medium lent itself to burned-out millennials who wanted to use their hands for something other than UX design and needed a “meditative” hobby. A lot of people with varying degrees of talent monetized their hobby. While that doesn’t describe East Fork’s relationship to pottery, they have encountered a few who tag their work as overly precious or twee. It’s a sentiment the company is acutely aware of. “Our generation is being sold a lot of lies and crap using the language of ‘handcrafted, authentic, and artisan,’” Connie says. “East Fork does our best to weed through the bullshit, and celebrates the people and things who are doing the right thing...even when the camera's not pointed on them.” The work itself seems to be a proxy for such groundedness—pleasing pieces of the earth that, with a thunk on the table, keep you from feeling like you might float away.Alex Matisse grew up in Groton, Massachusetts, the descendent of an eminent line of artists (his great grandfather was Henri Matisse and his step-grandfather was Marcel Duchamp). Alex discovered clay in boarding school. “That was the only medium I was every really interested in,” he remembers. At Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, he found his way to the ceramics studio, where he was exposed to the region’s long tradition of ceramic artists. Afterward, he took an apprenticeship with the potter Matt Jones, thereby connecting Alex to a rich lineage of potters stretching back to Bernard Leach, considered the “father of British studio pottery.” Clay, he realized, could connect him to something bigger: “You’re part of a whole arc,” he says in a video online.After his apprenticeships—including one with North Carolina–based Mark Hewitt—Alex continued to follow in his teachers’ footsteps. In 2009, he bought a rural property in Marshall, North Carolina, built a wood kiln, and began selling to collectors. Initially, his stoneware pots drew from folk traditions as diverse as the Mingei movement in Japan and humble Moravian craft. His decorative style—embellished with slip-trailed floral or geometric motifs—earned Alex distinction in the ceramics community. “I was getting comfortable in my own skin and away from the family name,” he says. “Every member of the family, stepping down from Matisse, has struggled with how to make their place in the world.” He felt pressure only to be happy and engaged in his life, to put his head down—its own kind of pressure.That’s where Connie found him—“hiding in the mountains.” Connie grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Berkeley College. She went to New York City, hoping to work in publishing. In 2008, the nonprofit she worked for shuttered. She went to France for six months and worked on a goat farm. Back in the U.S., on her way across the country, she took a job at a goat dairy near Alex’s property. The two met at a farmer’s market where Connie was selling cheese.Connie came to Alex’s farm and never left, and with the help of their potter friend and now East Fork CFO John Vigeland, they began to slowly grow the business. “Connie helped us look outside the niche world we inhabited,” says Alex. “We saw ceramics having its moment in the sun and we felt like we had something to add to the conversation. But we weren’t in Brooklyn or the places where that was happening.” The first time East Fork had an open house—or “kiln opening”—to show new work, no one showed up for the first three hours.Slowly, through community dinners at the farm, validation from a wider audience through a social media presence, a website, and a focus on simpler forms, East Fork started to grow. Its first big gig was a collaboration with Calvin Klein Home, making large vessels for the store on Madison Avenue. (Amy Mellen, former creative director of Calvin Klein Home, is now an East Fork investor.) When East Fork purchased a gas kiln that allowed it to produce more, faster, there was no looking back. “We realized there was a demand for this new work. And then it quickly evolved into us knowing that there was no middle ground,” says Alex. He and Connie sold the farm in 2018, handing it over to another ceramic artist and distributing the bricks from the wood kiln to area potters.East Fork now has close to 50 employees, between the stores and the factory, and plans to add another 30 to 50 over the next five years. “We are trying to create a culture that is nurturing and give people agency,” says Alex.Connie leads East Fork’s sales and marketing teams, made up of people like herself who don’t have a formal ceramics or marketing background. This has led to East Fork’s casual, personal voice. The brand’s website has a blog with posts about East Fork team members, “stress melting bath rituals,” and a transparent breakdown of why one plate costs $42. The newsletter comes from “Connie at East Fork.” A recent edition featured an invitation to spend Valentine’s Day at the factory for a meal and professional portraits.This feels like ceramics as self-care and, perhaps not surprisingly, Connie says that a majority of East Fork’s customers are women ages 30–40 who live in New York City. But she stresses that she sees East Fork mugs all around town in Asheville, and couples in their 60s are just as likely to buy a dinner set at one of the stores. The intimacy of the company’s messaging comes with a certain cost: Connie is still posting to Instagram while in line at the grocery store, and she’s opened her family’s life and home to the Internet in a way that requires “a lot of personal vulnerability.”“If you’re trying to be authentic, it’s hard to manufacture, but if you’re being sincere, that comes across,” says Alex. “We also have the value of having a lot of interesting stories to tell.”East Fork’s goal these days is to create the next great ceramics company, of which there are only a few left in the U.S.—a Heath 2.0, if you will. The team is focusing on scaling a smaller line of staples to keep up with demand. But this new chapter also marks something more personal. “I’ve finally experienced complete freedom from comparison in the new iteration of East Fork,” says Alex, in reference to his surname. “People used to want me to sign the bottom of a pot when they came to the farm…I feel like I’ve stepped out from that shadow. And all I want is for this company to succeed.”

We will place the glasses in the upper right part of our plate. This is how we put our glasses on a more casual and informal manner. The water glass will go directly above the knife, the wine glasses will be placed to the right of the water glass depending on the order they will be used. For example, water glass, red wine glass, white wine glass, and the champagne flute (Can also be placed next to the water glass). A dessert wine can also be served when the dessert is served. As you know, not all white, red or rose wines are the same, when serving different types of wine, it is recommended to change the glass. Hey there, time traveller!This article was published 13/8/2015 (1429 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.Tap is short for taproom - in other words, a pub - and there's no mistaking the St. James Tap for anything but. Yes, the space in front is designated as the dining area, and yes (unlike the practice in some others), children are allowed there, but there's nothing that differentiates that space from the rest of this long (300-plus seats) dark cavern - certainly not the mixture of high bar tables with stools and standard dining tables and chairs. Of course there are television sets throughout - mercifully silent in the dining area, when we were there (but I wouldn't expect serenity on game nights).Pubs seem to be a growth industry, and I chose the Tap mainly because (unlike many others) it isn't a chain or franchise operation. I don't know that it would have made much difference since, with a few exceptions, mediocre was as good as it got.The two best exceptions were pub classics, and I'd go back any time for the bangers and mash. Not, come to think of it, that the bratwurst used is British, but it was better than most traditional bangers I can remember: two plump, juicy sausages, bursting with flavour, perched on decent mashed potatoes, with an inoffensive gravy and a tangle of crunchy fried potato shreds ($17).The other, of course, is fish and chips - in this case the very un-English pickerel. There was more batter than fish, but it was crisp and puffy, the fish within was moist and sweet, and the thickish fries and creamy coleslaw were also good. Somebody forgot to include the promised "pea purée," which, unless you're a fan of that incomprehensible British favourite, mushy peas, is probably just as well ($16).The Cabbage Patch was a nice starter of roasted brussels sprouts with strips of bacon, the occasional smidgen of whipped gorgonzola and a few unpleasantly soft pistachios ($8). Two skewers of grilled shrimp, with a cilantro aioli, were good quality, but raised qualms about consistency, since one shrimp was cold and partially raw ($9).But those were the heights, and my qualms were justified by further experiences. Blazing Calamari were over-breaded squid (strips, mostly) and jalapeno slices, with no blaze and no other flavour. With them was a chipotle aioli that tasted sour (a characteristic of some other sauces).There's not much point to a Caprese salad unless the ingredients are top quality - and you'd expect to pay for it. Our Cultured Caprese was a suitably pricey $12, but what it bought were tasteless tomatoes and chunks of unpleasantly dry, rubbery bocconcini, graced only by some good green olives and a few basil leaves.The burger in the bacon cheeseburger was juiceless and without much flavour. The bacon was also dry and sliced miraculously thin, the Bothwell's horseradish and smoked cheddars were no more than an almost translucent glaze, the "sweet caramelized onions" were undetectable and the side of horseradish sauce also tasted sour ($12 with fries, soup or salad).Everything that came with the strip-loin sandwich was good - the fries, the mushroom gravy, the soft-cooked egg on top - everything, that is, but the steak itself, which was tender only in parts and flavourless throughout ($16).The Platter of Bones covers a lot of tasting territory, but it was a $25 disgrace. The wings were very tiny, unseasoned and missing their honey dill sauce. The bits of meat clinging to the ribs tasted dehydrated, with no flavour of barbecue, or much else, for that matter. The single big beef rib was so scorched we had to scrape away much of the black surface. On the side was a container of thin, raw-tasting barbecue sauce, which (I'm guessing) must originally have been intended for basting.The list of beers is fairly lengthy (with 40 on tap), and the cocktails are moderately priced. Although there were few other diners, we waited a long time for the food - a problem in the kitchen is my guess, since the pleasant, attentive and thoroughly knowledgeable service was otherwise faultless.

You can put battery operated candles in the bottom of these bowls. They sell waterproof ones for this purpose. We made these for my daughters wedding. I used pink candles submerged in a glass pedestal bowl filled with water and glass beads. We then floated pink flower candles in them, which were actually lit.TablewareInside or out, the Table décor will be the most impressive part of your reception. If you search various party supply stores you will find some great choices for your theme. I have listed a few here to get you started.Your tables will be very impressive with the royal blue table cloths, medieval themed plates with matching napkins and jeweled goblets. You could always just purchase plain blue or red plates also.Wall DécorAn outside venue would be a great choice for this style of wedding, but if your reception ends up being indoors, you will still have many options for décor.You can hang ivy in various places on the walls and even incorporate it into your table décor.I found these battery operated torches that would look really cool hanging on the walls also, maybe hang the ivy around the same area as the torches.Favors and Gift TableYou can use the same royal blue table cloths for the gift and favor table, that you are using for the banquet tables. Or you can go with Red, Hunter Green or even White, if that is what you prefer.An appropriately framed photo of the Bride and Groom dressed in their Renaissance outfits would look great on the gift table. You could use an antique or rod iron frame, easily found online or at Hobby Lobby. On either side of the picture I would put some nice rod iron candle holders with battery operated candles.I think a rod iron Bird Cage or a box shaped like a treasure chest, would make a great box for gift cards from your guests. Just make sure the cards will fit in the opening. For my daughters wedding I found a cool box at Hobby Lobby that had a rounded top like a treasure chest. She wasn't having a renaissance wedding, and it was white satin, but could easily have been transformed into a treasure chest. We cut a nice big slit in the top and it worked great for the many gift cards they received.The favor table would look really amazing lined with the awesome little castle favor boxes, I found on Amazon. You can also find rhinestone jewels or fake gold coins, that could be scattered around the favor boxes as an additional favor. The jewels come in pretty much any color you could want. You could scatter smaller jewel confetti among the rhinestones for a bit more bling.Entertainment & Reception MusicFor fun you could have someone dress up like a Court Jester, a Beggar or a Juggler.You will probably have a DJ, so you will want to be sure they have the type of music that you want played at your reception. If your going to play renaissance era music, it might be hard to find a DJ that has that type of music. You will want to let them know well in advance what type of music you expect so that they will have time to acquire enough of it for you.Just because your wedding theme is renaissance era, does not mean you can't have modern music played at the reception. Most weddings I've seen with this theme, use the renaissance music for the ceremony, but when it comes to the reception, they use modern day music so everyone can dance. You might throw in a couple of renaissance songs here and there, just to keep the mood going.You will also want to be sure your DJ has the proper attire for you wedding theme. You might have to provide them with a renaissance costume.It would be ideal if you could find a group of Minstrels for hire. They could stroll through your reception while dinner is being served. I know there are some out there for hire, but depending on where you live, they might not be too abundant. Maybe you know someone who plays an instrument that would be willing to dress like a Minstrel and help you out. But you will probably just be limited to your DJ, who can play a nice renaissance tune during dinner.Renaissance Era MusicThe music from the renaissance era is really beautiful.

George Lim is a die-hard fan of English Premier League club Liverpool. This is obvious as an extension of his D'Tavern Pub & Restaurant is decorated with framed Liverpool Football Club (LFC) club jerseys, posters and memorabilia. The 54-year-old pub owner said most of the LFC merchandise was bought in England on his holiday trips. "I have been to Anfield (the LFC stadium) a few times since the 70s," said Lim, who has been a LFC fan for more than 30 years. He said the pub had been operating since February 1983, with the extension added to the premises four years ago. There are more than 10 framed LFC jerseys and shirts, some of which were autographed by former players such as Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler, on the walls of the extension of the pub. There are also LFC jerseys signed by members of the present Champions League-winning squad such as Steven Gerrard, Jerzy Dudek, Sami Hyypia, Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise. Banners and wallpapers printed with the title of the LFC song You'll Never Walk Alone adorned the walls and ceiling. On the walls are also posters of the trophy-winning LFC teams from the 70s and 80s. Even the toilet door is painted in the red colour of LFC. There are also football memorabilia such as a replica of the World Cup as well as LFC collectibles such as lighters, mugs, key chains and watches stored inside glass-encased cabinets. The extension of the pub also has two pool tables and several wall-mounted televisions. Besides the dedicated "shrine" to LFC, the pub is also known for its Western cuisine. Among its specialities is US Rib-Eye Steak (charbroiled medium) that was served with lettuce, sweet corn, carrot, cucumber, sliced pineapple and mashed potatoes. The steak, which Lim said was air-flown from the United States on a regular basis, was juicy and succulent. Meanwhile, the French Onion Soup that was served with cheese crouton, was another enjoyable dish. The pub also has other specialities like Roasted Lamb Shank as well as seafood dishes including Grilled Tiger Prawns, Baked Ikan Kurau (threadfin), US Live Oysters and Lobster Morney baked with cheese. Lim said the dishes were pork-free. Besides beer, a variety of Australian, New Zealand, French and Italian wines as well as hard liquors are available. The main area of the pub has a restaurant-styled setting with a small stage overlooking dining tables and chairs. Here, there is a stylish retro ambience with framed posters of musicians such as the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson as well as contemporary American paintings hung on the walls. The pub, with a seating capacity for 120 people, has a cosy and relaxed atmosphere.
