Start Your Micro:bit Programming Trip

Micro:bit is BBC launched micro-computer product for children at grade 7. Since it it a product designed for children, then every step of operation must be easy enough for children to understand. BBC do not disappoint us for the biggest feature of micro:bit is very easy to use.

If you have never touched programming, that doesn’t matter. Microsoft has developed a programming environment based on web for micro:bit. It is named Makecode, which use Blockly based on Google to compile code just like playing bricks.

You just have to drag blocks, then you can make a program. You can done it by yourself alone, or with the help of your parents. To program with your parents, it will be a good time to enjoy family love.

In the following passages, we are going to show you a detailed course of Micro:bit and start your programming trip together.Today, let’s learn how to use Blocks interface to compile your first program.First of all, connect micro:bit to your computer.

Use a USB cable to connect micro:bit to your computer, then you will find the yellow light on micro:bit lighted. And on your computer, micro:bit will be loaded into your computer as a outer storage device. If you see an outer storage device named MICROBIT in your computer, then it shows you have complete the connection successfully.

Next, log onto web: https://makecode.

We will see the interface like the above picture. And then, let’s get to know each segment function according to the serial number in the picture.Micro:bit: Return to homepage of micro:bit.

Code compiling interface: A place for you to write code.Download: To download program into your computer or micro:bit.Name or Storage: Rename your program and set a storage route.

Undo and Zoom: Undo and redo your operation; zoom in or out your program bricks.Next, let’s take an example to learn how to use Makecode. We are going to write a heart-bit program for micro:bit.

Step 1:Build a new program and name it “heart”.We can see 2 bricks already existed in the compiling interface. If you have played Arduino, you will find this is very similar to Arduino initial code.

“On Start” is for initial brick and only carry out once. “Forever” is for circulation brick which makes program circulate.Step 2:Choose “show icon” in “Basic” brick, drag it into the right compiling interface with your mouse and embed it into brick “forever”.

When you release your mouse, you will hear a crack voice, which shows your brick is well- placed.Step 3:Copy brick “show icon” and choose pattern “heart” in the drop-down list.Step 4:In order to prevent too fast rotation of pattern displayed, we have to add a little delay.

To this step, we have completed our whole programming. You can see program operation in the left simulator.Step 5:After checking and no default founded, download your program into micro:bit.

There are 2 methods for download: one is to preserve “.Hex” of the program in your computer and then copy and paste into outer storage device “MICROBIT” just like a USB flash disk , the other is download program directly into MICROBIT. Here, we use the latter method:Once we completed download, your program will run automatically.

You can see your micro:bit and check whether the animation on display is same like your program. Now, you have finished your first micro:bit program. Isn’t it make you feel a sense of achievement? You can use “share” to send the program link to your friends and tell them your experience to share your happiness of programming.

Or you can embed your program code into website or blogs, just like the following:In the share web page, not only you can see whole code, but also check simulator and download program just like Makecode.Relative Readings:How can we know someone is closing beforehand? How to make a counter with micro:bit?Elecfreaks Micro:bit AdapterLight Micro:bit with MbedHow Micro:bit works with octopus? UX for Childrens Products
In today’s world, children grow up surrounded by technology, using tablets and phones as a source of entertainment from as young as 2/3. These kids are commonly known as ‘digital natives’.I’m researching into how to design a product for children aged 9–12, and how to tailor the UX to suit them specifically. Research shows that we shouldn’t just stick everyone younger than 13 into one group, but rather split them into three groups based on their cognitive development.By the time children reach age 9, they’re most likely already familiar with using apps and touchscreen devices. Compared to a 6 year old, they’ll be able to be more specific in their movements, able to recognise smaller CTA’s and touching smaller targets. By age 9, children have developed an advanced level of reading skills, meaning they’ll be able to scan through content and pick out the information they need. However — it’s important to remember that they mightn’t be able to distinguish between genuine content and advertisements.Designing for ChildrenI came across an InVision blog post about designing for children, and pulled the following key points from the article:According to Debra Gelman, author of Designing for Kids: Digital Products for Playing and Learning, when you’re designing for adults — even when designing games for adults — the goal is to help them cross the finish line. But when you’re designing for children, the finish line is just a small part of the story. There are four points to note:Children love a challenge — this could be through the challenge of a game or resolving a conflict/overcoming a problem to reach the solution.Children want feedback — on everything. Whether their action is right or wrong, children will rely on visual or auditory feedback to tell them so.Children are more trusting than adults — they aren’t aware of the consequences of some actions. This means the designer needs to safeguard the product.Kids develop faster than adults — the rate of their cognitive development means they need to be grouped into smaller age ranges.Children and adults both expect design patterns to be consistent. Contrary to popular belief, kids don’t like it when everything on their screen does something ‘cool.’Elements that get in the way or animate spontaneously or don’t contribute to the overall goal can frustrate kids, and cause them to abandon a game or an app entirely.“In addition, if everything on the screen moves, is brightly colored, or makes noise on the same level, kids and adults become confused about what is interactive and what isn’t, and this makes it very hard for them to use the site or app.”A common design principle for adults is to keep interactions and feedback consistent so that users will be able to learn how use the site or app quickly. The same is true for kids.NavigationChildren will take icons in a literal sense. Whereas we adults would recognise the hamburger icon as being a menu, children wouldn’t understand what these lines mean. It’s important for designers to create icons which show exactly where the user will be taken when they select it, realistically we should over-simplify it.A way to do this would be to use larger icons, and accompany them with text.A few examples:The Sesame Street website uses both a combination of icons and text, and icons for navigation. The main navigation is an icon and text, with the secondary nav simply containing icons of the characters — children will be able to understand that they are in the games menu, then choosing a character’s game. The Peppa Pig website also uses icons and text for their navigation. These websites are aimed at children younger than my target audience of 9–12, but when it comes to navigation, I need to design for the youngest user. In other words I need to over-simplify the navigation to ensure that every user can use it effectively.Creating an effective designWe all know children like bright colours and animations to attract their attention, but I want to dive deeper and understand how to use these within an app.A point from an article by InVision which I thought was interesting was to clear up the bottom of the screen, as kids will accidentally hit the bottom of the tablet screen which would in turn cause them to lose their place. A lot of apps use the bottom of the screen as a space for their main navigation, but in this case it could be more of a hinderance than convenience.Another point which came up in a few articles is that children like to be surprised, in that they might receive an extra life in a game for completing a level or even a prize for using the app two days in a row. This is something I should take into consideration when I am designing my lesson plans. I need the kids to want to learn sign language, so surprising them alongside giving feedback will be a good way to do this. I’ll refer to my research on gamification to find more ways to do this.·RELATED QUESTIONIs there any extension to show the information of children products of configurable products in Magento 2?Configurable Product Grid Table View for Magento 2 displays children products of configurable product in a neat table to allow customers to add multiple simple products to cart at onceShow all associated products in a table for quicker orderingShow all related product information in the table: product availability, unit price, quantity and subtotalAllow adding multiple simple products to cart simultaneouslyIntegrate default magento color swatch function into the moduleLike Magento 1 version, Configurable Product Grid Table View for Magento 2 helps store owners to provide a better display for their configurable products replaced for the drop-down list in Magento default.
