    I'm not a doctor, but I have peripheral neuropathy, too. I sympathize with you in your situation, and although I don't know how helpful I can be, I will try.First of all, understand that my condition is mild/moderate and I am not handicapped in any official sense.

    If your condition is more severe than mine my suggestions may be useless to you.I have tried several different medicines to control the pain, including Neurontin and Lyrica. Both of those do help with this pain but I stopped using them due to side effects and risk of dependence.

    (The only med I ever took that worked without these effects has been taken off the market.) Lyrica worked better than Neurontin for me, but caused me to gain a lot of weight, which was the primary reason I quit using it. I tried topical creams too, including a topical form of Neurontin which I thought was nice because it helped me avoid the main side effects of that medication.

    I now use topical treatments, exercise and Ultracet. These strategies don't stop my feet from hurting, but they do help me cope with the pain without resorting to the medications I was using before.I use both hot and cold on my feet. I used to dunk my feet in an ice water bath on work nights because I worked on my feet at that time and sometimes the pain was so bad I couldn't sleep.

    I don't recommend that if you are diabetic or have some other circulation issue, but the "cold shock" calmed my all-over burning pain down very well. (By cold shock, I mean dunking into an ice-filled bucket of cold water and keeping it in there as long as you can bear it. Not until you have frost bite, though.) Note that those cold "freezer" packs always made my pain worse.

    I don't know why the ice water in the bucket is different, but it is effective at least for me.The microwave hot packs help with particular nerves that are firing a lot. I cover that spot with a washcloth and lay the hot pack over it.

Strokes of Genius Interview with Artists From the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Association in India
Nadeem Shaikh is a 20-year old self-taught artist. Right from his childhood, he has been passionate about painting and so, he recently enrolled himself at Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Art, Mumbai. While this sounds like yet another heartwarming story of an ambitious child pursuing his dreams, what sets it apart is that Nadeem doesnt have his hands. Despite the odds, he has always been enthusiastic about life, ever ready for a new adventure. I was born without hands but have always considered myself unique and blessed, he says, adding that his family, consisting of his mother, two older brothers and three older sisters, has been his biggest support system.While Nadeem was still at school, his teacher recommended his name to the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists association (MFPA) in India, which gave his career a much needed boost. The associations workshops and network put me and my work in the spotlight, says Nadeem, adding that he is grateful for the abundant love and appreciation he has received. I caught up with Nadeem for this interview at a workshop, one of the many conducted by the association. In these workshops, artists do painting demos for schools, corporates and other groups. At the end of the workshop, participants can buy their work or even merchandise like mugs and tee-shirts with art printed on them (see last two images). All proceeds go towards building the livelihood of members who are mouth or foot artists. Its important to mention here that MFPAs tagline is Self-help, not charity, which means that the association instills in its artists a sense of self-respect and dignity that comes from earning an independent, honest and secure livelihood through the sale of their artwork. Another artist (mouth artist) who has greatly benefited from being a member of MFPA is Surat-based, Manoj Bhingare. Unlike Nadeem, Manoj lost his hands in a childhood accident. Initially, I found it difficult to do even simple things, which dampened my spirits, he says. Gradually, I got the hang of things and gained confidence. I noticed that I enjoyed painting and the more I painted the more I was appreciated, which further boosted my confidence. In 1999, Manoj received the National Bal Shree Honour and this accolade strengthened his resolve to pursue a career in arts. At first, I didnt get admission as most colleges thought I wouldnt be able to paint because of my handicap but I convinced them to give me a chance. Through sheer talent and hard work, Manoj proved that he was no different from other students and also secured a first class when he graduated. After that he taught art at a local school and now runs his own drawing and painting classes. Like Nadeem, Manoj also enjoys creating portraits and has painted many well-known people. That being said, he recalls an abstract painting of his, themed Gujarat and its culture and water, which sold for a whopping Rs. 1 lakh, and believes its his most treasured artwork. I hadnt explored abstract painting much before that but the experience helped me discover that I enjoyed it as much as I do creating portraits.In a country where most people see a career in the arts as an option for students whove secured a lower percentage; where Arts is perceived as the poor sister of Science and Commerce by the majority; its heartening to know that art still holds the power to not just inspire but also offer livelihoods. Both Nadeem and Manoj are passionate artists and believe that its important to do what you enjoy. In fact, Manoj, because of his high percentage, was advised by his school principal to pursue a career in Science. Anyone can get them and people with bunions often also have hammertoes when your second, third, or fourth toe bends at the middle joint, creating a hammer-like appearance. Comfort insoles which are normally made from gel are a good option, these will not only absorb shock but also cushion the foot easing pressure off painful areas

Rigid ankle braces are good for this as well because it will keep you from reinjuring the ankle during recovery due to extra ankle protection. Rigid ankle braces can provide a sense of confidence as well.
