If the opener is purchased regardless of the type of door, the entire investment is wasted and the object of the purchase is a draw. Below are two types of common doors:Swing Gate , Slide GateGate Opener Devices:An automatic door opener is an installed tool or device that helps the door to open and close automatically based on an electrical impulse triggered by a remote control, keypad or sensor installed.

It can also be called electric gate opener. A large number of people and major shopping centers have an automatic door opener installed for security and convenience reasons. The best automatic door opener will open the door and keep it open for a period of time for the traffic to which it will be closed.

This can also be controlled manually via the remote control.Gate Opener VS Automatic elevators Opener:The automatic lifts work without having to press the floor buttons. • Commercial Air Travel of Hand Bag

Hand baggage allowance is a topic frequently discussed in the context of commercial air travel. On the one hand, passengers may want to have more of their possessions at hand during flight, skip the often time-consuming baggage claim process, and avoid the risk of having their checked baggage lost or damaged. On the other hand, safety concerns, takeoff weight limitations, and financial incentives cause airlines to impose limits on how much and what passengers can take into the aircraft cabin.

Studies have found that passengers often pause to retrieve cabin baggage during an emergency evacuation, despite instructions to the contrary in pre-flight safety briefings. This is not a new phenomenon, as it was observed during the evacuation of a Boeing 737 that caught fire in 1984. At least one passenger re-entered a Boeing 777 that crashed in 2008 to retrieve personal belongings. Video of the evacuation of a Sukhoi Superjet that caught fire on landing in 2019 clearly shows passengers on the emergency slides with large suitcases, raising questions as to whether this contributed to the loss of life. Remote locking of overhead baggage bins is being considered as a solution to the issue.

AllowancesThe International Air Transport Association (IATA) sets guidelines for cabin baggage/hand luggage/carry-on luggage size. They are not mandatory, however, and individual airlines can and do vary their requirements. The IATA guideline at one time stated:

Cabin baggage should have a maximum length of 56 cm (22 inches), width of 45 cm (18 inches) and depth of 25 cm (10 inches) including all handles, side pockets, wheels etc.

The actual size and weight limits of cabin baggage can differ widely, in some cases they are dependent on the aircraft model being used, in other cases it depends on the booking class. Due to the lack of standardization a large number of different specifications were created by the airlines on the maximum permitted cabin luggage restrictions (see below). In 2015 the IATA made an effort to introduce a common smaller size for cabin luggage by introducing the "IATA Cabin OK" logo. Major airlines have expressed their interest to accept luggage of that size on their flights. This is specified as 55 x 35 x 20 cm (or 21.5 x 13.5 x 7.5 inches). There were news that the move was backed by nine airlines including Lufthansa, Emirates and Qatar Airlines. The new size restrictions were criticised widely with the introduction program to be put on hold a few days later. Consequently none of the mentioned airlines has introduced the new format (by April 2016).

Dimensions are sometimes listed as "linear", meaning the height, width, and length are not to exceed a certain total number.

Business Class, First class passengers and holders of high level mileage club members are often allowed to carry on a second bag of the same size and weight, or a smaller size and weight.[citation needed]

On smaller sized aircraft, sometimes the hand baggage can be carried to the aircraft door, where it is collected by baggage handlers for stowing in the cargo area and returned to the passenger right after landing.[citation needed]

Security restrictionsFollowing the increase in restrictions imposed on flights from UK airports and to the USA after the events of August 2006 transatlantic aircraft plot, hand baggage on such flights was restricted to one cabin bag no bigger than 45 cm × 35 cm × 16 cm effective since 15 August. On 21 September 2006, the British Airports Authority advised that from the following day, the allowable size of the single item of hand baggage on outgoing flights from the UK would be increased to 56 cm × 45 cm × 25 cm (approx. 22 in × 17.75 in × 9.85 in), the IATA guideline size. Most UK airports remain to have a strict limit of one piece of cabin baggage per passenger, including business class (allowed two pieces of cabin baggage within Europe, excluding flights to and from the UK).

European UnionA common regulation for cabin baggage restrictions was introduced on 6 November 2006 in European Union and in Switzerland, Norway and Iceland.

blunt objects, clubs and all larger sticks, including sports utilities (e.g. skateboard)

inflammable objects, including ethanol, alcoholic beverage above 70%, some match sticks

toxic chemicals, including pepper spray, liquid batteries, blood samplesUnited StatesThe United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has introduced a series of restrictions effective since 26 September 2006 under the name "3:1:1" for liquids.

    Restrictions on liquids:

3.4 ounce or smaller of containers for liquids and gels (100 ml)

1 quart-size clear plastic zip-top bag holding the liquid contents (approx. 950 ml)

1 bag per traveler shown openly in the security bin

the TSA guidelines explicitly accept the metricized portions of 100 ml / 1 liter as defined later in the European Union

the list of exceptions for liquids (baby milk, diabetes diet) is identical to EU guidelines. The TSA has additional restrictions for security searches: for example, the baggage should not be locked (except with a special luggage locks that TSA staff can open), gifts should not be wrapped, and shoes may be required to be taken off during body search with the metal detector. Food items in the luggage may be mistaken for dangerous material triggering an intensive search.

  • Why Is an Induction Motor Called an Asynchronous Motor?

Induction motor works on the principle of induction i.e., when the power supply is given to the stator, it produces rotating magnetic field which gets induced in the rotor of induction motor causing rotor to rotate. As the rotor of the induction motor starts rotating only after receiving induced emf from stator, it always rotates with the speed less than that of the stator.

The rotor and stator of induction motor do not run at same speed. As they run at Asynchronous speed they are called Asynchronous motor. In case of synchronous motor the rotor receives separate excitation from external supply which makes the rotor to rotate synchronously with stator.

  • What Is the Tiny Room Between Two Rows of Automatic Doors at Store Entrances Called?

It is called an airlock, just like on a submarine or a spaceship. They generally have a separate small heater or AC duct. The idea is that untempered air from the outdoors is trapped in this small "room", then heated or cooled before it gets into the main building space.

Obviously in a busy building that has constant coming and going where both doors are open at the same time, this doesn't work so well. But in general it is a very practical method of minimizing the amount of unconditioned air that enters a building. What is the tiny room between two rows of automatic doors at store entrances called?.

How Often to Clean Your Sofa? | L'EssenzialeSofas offer a comfortable spot to relax and relieve some of the day's aches. However, nothing is more discomforting like a dirty sofa. There are various little things you can do to keep your sofas and upholstery clean and tidy. Occasional cleaning by a certified professional is also highly recommendable. Before cleaning your sofa, however, there are a few things you should consider. The three main aspects include; The material used for upholstery Sofa upholstery and covers are made of different materials ranging from cotton, velvet and synthetic fibers to delicate tencel and viscose. You can also find blended fibers. Each material requires a different approach in cleaning so it is important to determine how delicate your sofa is and what procedures and cleaning agents it can withstand. Most sofas come with a manufacturer's cleaning guide that specifies how to vacuum, remove stains, spills and/or clean. It is recommendable to take some time and read the label before using any detergent on your favorite sofa. Hot water extraction can be used on cotton and synthetic fiber sofas. However, this procedure is not recommendable for delicate fibers like tinsel. You should, therefore, look up the ideal cleaning procedure in your manufacturer's guide or determine it based on the material used. Choose soft cleaning agents and shampoos to avoid damaging the fibers, threads, and patterns in your sofa. When to clean your sofa The frequency with which you clean your sofa is influenced by a myriad of factors including how many children and pets you have, how dusty your town/residence is and how fast the material gathers dust/dirt. Routine dusting and vacuuming will help you remove daily dirt, crumbs and dust. You also need professional sofa cleaning every few months to return your sofa's original glamour. Below are a few tips on how often you should clean your sofa. a) Clean out spills immediately - spills can quickly penetrate and tarnish your sofa so it is recommendable to clean them out immediately. Follow the manufacturer's instruction to quickly blot any spill before it dries out. If it leaves a spot, check the fabric label to determine the safety of using warm water and various cleaning agents. b) Vacuum weekly - dust, bread crumbs, pet hair and debris can quickly accumulate between the seams and crevices in your sofa. To pick them up, simply use a regular vacuum with upholstery attachments. You can vacuum on a weekly basis to ensure your sofa remains clean and free of dust, crumbs and other small solid particles. c) Treat stains before they become permanent - stains from organic sources such as mustard, butter, coffee and food can be removed using locally available stain removers like hydrogen peroxide and water. If your sofa is made of antique fabric or silk, contract a professional cleaner. They have the right tools, agents and procedures required to restore your sofa's appeal without damaging its fabric. d) Call in a pro cleaner ever 1-2 years - it is recommendable to hire certified professional upholstery cleaner every 12-24 months. Daily and weekly cleaning will keep your sofa clean and hospitable. However, you need professional cleaning to root out any tough spills, spots and changes in color. Sofas and household upholstery require maintenance in the form of regular cleaning to keep them looking great in your living room. Most cleaning tasks are DIYs, but if you do not have the time, you can still hire pro cleaners. Make sure you contract credible licensed professionals for the work. You can always look through customer reviews to determine if the company is trustworthy and reliable enough to clean your sofa.
How to Use a Twin Mattress on a Futon Frame
Using a traditional mattress with a futon frame is a simple process. The main problem with using a regular mattress is that the futon will not be able to fold into sofa size. With a regular twin mattress, the futon must always remain as a bed. The futon may also need some additional support to support the weight of the mattress and box spring, if you use one. After choosing a box spring and mattress, converting the bed will take less than one hour.Inspect the frame of your futon. Check the distance between the slats and the material the futon is made from. Both metal and wood frames will work with regular mattresses, but some futon frames may not have the ability to carry the weight of a full-sized mattress every day. Check this by sitting on the frame alone. If it sags under your weight, the futon will not support the mattress. Expand the futon from a sofa to bed position.Add extra support to the frame if necessary. Remove the old mattress. The slats should be about 6 inches apart from each other to provide the necessary support for a box spring and mattress. If the slats are too far apart, rest wooden planks on the frame between the slats for additional support. Cut the slats so they fit onto the frame without sticking out too much. Don't worry about screwing them to the frame. The weight of the mattress will hold them in place.Check to see if a box spring is necessary for the installation of the mattress. A box spring provides additional support and also helps remove potential bumps from the mattress caused by the frame. It is possible to feel the slats of the futon through the mattress in some cases, which will be eliminated if you use a box spring. Choose a box spring if you prefer firmer support while you sleep.Place the box spring on the bed. Place a dust ruffle over the box spring to hide it and the futon frame from view.Place the mattress over the box spring. Place additional padding over the mattress if desired. Cover the bed with sheets and blankets.

How to paint and upholster metal chairsHow to Paint and Upholster Metal Chairs Have you ever been in a creative rut, where you feel like you really want to make something but no ideas come to you? I have been in one recently and it's such an uncomfortable place to be. Staying home has me itching to do projects and keep myself busy because that is what heals my soul, yet my brain is mentally exhausted and incapable of thinking of what to even create. I've found that sometimes the best way to get myself over it is to get into a project I've been putting off, or to use supplies I already have to make something beautiful. What does not help me is falling down the Pinterest rabbit hole (although I do love to pin creative ideas- you can find my pins here!), or shopping for fun art supplies for which I do not have a plan. Raise your hand if you are guilty of that; mine is sheepishly up in the air. This past weekend, I put both of those ideas that get me through together... I worked on a project that's been sitting in my basement for almost a year and used only things I had on hand, and I can not tell you how good it felt, and how awake my soul felt afterwards. Today I am sharing the process and result, and teaching you how to paint and upholster metal chairs. This post contains affiliate links. I earn a small commission from qualifying sales and truly appreciate your support. Emmy and I found this pair of vintage metal children's chairs last year at a yard sale for $3 total. They were brown which I do not mind but the finish was not in great shape, and the seats were solid, but they had this plastic trim around them which was old and brittle seemed like it would be uncomfortable for a child. All in all, they were pretty ugly, but I loved the shape and could not pass up for the price. You can see on the seats that the trim was separated in the back, and had some places where it was pulling away and I knew that would pinch little fingers eventually, so that needed to go. I decided to give them a paint and upholstery job to update them. Before I did, I brought them out to see if they would fit Wilder yet. They are still a little too big and you can see that his feet are not hitting the ground. He needs help getting into and out of them for now, but he loves that these chairs are just for him. His expression here does not show it because he did not like that I left him with his feet dangling so I could take a photo. Also, you should know I edited how the booger he had... you are welcome. Before beginning this project I assessed my supply stash to see what I had. Almost exactly two years ago, I reupholstered a set of bentwood chairs for my old dining room. (Oh, how I loved those chairs! BTW, in that post, I teach how how to upholster round seats which can be pretty tricky!) When I purchased the indigo fabric for those seats, Jo-ann's had been having a big sale on decorating fabric and I bought two other styles as well, one w pretty gray sort of mud cloth inspired design that I thought would be perfect for these metal chairs. Of course, you can not just slap fabric over wood seats; you need some cushioning. I had enough batting to work perfectly. These are kids' chairs so they do not quite need the amount of cushioning and foam that our full grown rear ends need. I also had black and gold spray paint in my paint supply here (We've only been here a year, so my supply is somewhat limited!). After selecting the fabric, I opted for gold to complement the gray. That being said, here are all of the supplies I used for this project. upholstery fabric (I can not find my exact fabric, but I love these options: here, here, here, here.) gold spray paint (this is HANDS DOWN my go-to gold and adheres SO well!) If you follow me on instagram, you may have seen that I documented this whole process in my stories this past weekend. I put all of those stories together to create a video for you so that you can see exactly how to paint the metal as well as the very details process of upholstering the seats. You can watch that video below, or follow the step by step tutorial below that if you prefer. Before you begin with chairs, always remove the seats, even if you do not plan to recover them. You can see when you flip them over that they attach with screws and are very easy to remove and reattach. Once the seats are removed, give the chair frames a light sanding, just like you would if they were made of wood. This just creates a rough enough surface for the paint to adhere. I find with metal furniture that consists of spindly parts that sanding blocks are the best approach as their foam allows you to bend and curve with the piece. Below they are sanded and not yet wiped so you can see a layer of dust. After sanding them, wipe them clean with a dry lint free cloth to remove any dust. They should still appear somewhat rough from sanding but not shiny like they were to begin with. Place your piece on a drop cloth. (I only had some plastic sheeting left over from another project, so I used that.) Lay your chairs on the ground face down and give them a light even coat of paint, careful to move back and forth and stay about 10 inches away from what you are painting (to avoid drips). Flip the chairs to a standing upright position and continue the first coat. Repeat this process once more, and a third time if needed. For my third coat, I simply had to touch up a few spots that needed a bit more paint. By the way, you can see just why I love this paint below. It's so smooth on top of its amazing adhesion. While they are drying you can work on your chair seats. I did not take many photos on how to recover the chairs, but there is a very detailed step by step of that in the video above starting at the 1:34 point. However, if you prefer photos, I shared my method for covering straight edge seats with corners here. The only difference is that in this case I used quilt batting instead of upholstery foam. FYI, the corners tend to be the trickiest, but I have found that my method words really well to create clean and tight corners. (The below photo was from my instagram story which is why it has text. ) After the seats have been upholstered, they are ready to be reattached to the dry frames, using the same screws and holes that they were originally attached with. To be honest, I do not yet know exactly where these chairs will go, but it was a lot of fun to get my creative juices flowing again, and to use things I already had. I have found that some of the best projects come from resourcefulness. This teepee sits in the corner of our living room, and I am considering possibly moving it when Wilder is a little bigger and is ready to sit at a table with his chairs. We do not yet have a kids table, so as soon as it's safe to thrift, I will be on the lookout! There is not much space in our living room, but I've also considered a fold out shelf at table height for these chairs, placing them to the right of the teepee. Who knows where exactly they will end up. What I do know is that I feel great having accomplished something, and Wilder was thrilled with the outcome. Happy clients are the best clients! These chairs are also so much more comfortable and safer for him (minus that one slightly crooked leg I need to see if Chris' brute strength can fix a bit!). What do you do when you are in a creative rut? I would love to hear your method for digging out. If you liked this project and learned something from it, I would love it if you shared it!2. How do I remove rust marks from my patio?Rust marks can appear on a patio for various reasons, and can prove tricky to remove. Rust marks can stain a patio where metal furniture has been placed onto a stone patio. If you employ a lawn maintenance company they may spread fertiliser around your patio and path area. These products can contain iron, and when mixed with water and air they become iron oxide. Again, this will create rust marks on top of the stone surfaces such as patios and pathways. Oxide deposits can also be released from within stone paving if your contractor uses brick acid (nb. please do not do this- Conclear is safer) to clean up after installing a stone patio. This will appear as brown rusty coloured stains on the surface of your paving, especially on Kandla Grey Sandstone, which is particularly affected. Many of our customers have had this problem, and come to us with what they think is a ruined patio. Cement spills are often aggressively treated with brick acid after installation by contractors. We do not recommend this. Conclear is our safer and ecological cement remover. However, it is possible to remove rust marks and stains caused by brick acid use with Rob Parkers Best Rust Remover. Rob Parkers Rust Remover can solve the problem in all these instances. Rob Parkers Best Rust Remover is easy to apply. Use a paint brush to apply the product to the affected spots and watch the rust disappear. Rinse the area with water once the rust has disappeared. When the area is dry Stoneworld recommend sealing the stone to prevent rust stains from occurring again.3. An Introduction to Futons
Futons have been a fixture of college students' dorm rooms and other urban living settings for decades. Futons are stylish, functional, and versatile; they can be integrated into nearly any setting. Futon beds are lightweight and simple, providing sleepers with a comfortable place to rest. What most people don't know is that futon beds originated in Japan. For hundreds of years, Japanese people have slept on thin futon mattresses placed directly on the floor. They saw no need to have an elaborate bed with a frame and box spring and headboard. All that these early futons involved was the thin mattress, small pillows, and a blanket. In the morning, the futon bed could be rolled up and put in a closet. Over time, the concept of sleeping on futon beds spread to America.Modern futons often have adjustable frames and can be used as either a couch or a bed, depending on how the frame is arranged. The frames are usually made of colored metal, but can be wooden as well. Futon beds do not needed to be folded out like couch beds, all the sleeper needs to do is push the back of the frame from the upright couch position to a horizontal bed position. These setups are comfortable in either the couch or bed position and are great for accommodating overnight guests.Current models of futon mattresses are thicker than the original Japanese models. They are often filled with wool, polyester, cotton, or soft man made fibers. They do not have the springs that conventional beds have. A normal mattress can become uncomfortable over time if the springs do not hold up well to pressure. This is not a problem with futons because most of them have no springs.Futon beds have evolved greatly over time. From their simple beginnings as space saving Japanese beds to their modern multi use models, they are a great alternative to conventional beds.
What Makes Modern Futons Different
When people hear the word futon, they may conjure a specific image in their minds. A wood slate frame, wooden arms, and a bulky cushion are the first thing that people may imagine when they hear about futons. It may surprise them to learn that modern futons are different. The word futon is used to describe certain types of furniture that may not resemble a traditional piece of furniture. Other times, manufacturers have different terms to describe what people would think of as a futon. What is a futon?Traditionally, a futon is a wooden frame that can be transformed into a couch or a bed. This piece of furniture has been altered by manufactures so that the word can be defined as a piece of furniture that serves more than one purpose. No longer made only out of wood and cotton mattresses, several different types of futons can be purchased and used to create a living room suite or furniture for a family room. One example would be setting pieces next to one another to create a sectional. A lounge futon can seat one or two people and has no armrests. The only piece that bends is the one that supports a person's back or shoulders and is arranged so the person is sitting up or lying down.A lounge sofa can be placed next to a two-seat futon. Then, an end table can be placed in the corner, and a three seat futon can be placed at the long end of the room. This creates a sectional look out of individual pieces of furniture that are more functional separately than a traditional sectional.A futon bunk bed is a two-seat futon that is connected to a loft bed. This creates additional space for a dorm room or a child's room. As a couch, students can use the futon to entertain or watch TV. Then they can open it for guests to sleep on.For dorm rooms, modern futons can be used as a way to diversify a space. Used as a couch during the day and a bed at night, the dorm room can look like a living room or a bedroom depending on what a student wants to have at any one time. There are also outdoor futons and swing futons for patios or porches. While many company's call lounge chairs futons, a more traditional futon can be used to create an outdoor living room. A swing futon is a rocker swing with a futon as the seat. This can make a nice hammock when in the reclining position. Not all futons are equalSome products that resemble futons have other names. Click-clack bed looks like a traditional sofa, love seat, or chair. It has a metal frame covered with cloth, suede, or leather and transforms into a bed using a series of hinges. Some click-clack beds have traditional arms that are removed, while others are designed so the head and foot of the bed bend up to create armrests when it is in a couch form. Some types of furniture are incorrectly called futons. Often, manufacturers call a platform bed a futon. These types of futons are sold for pets as well as humans. Futon mattresses are mattresses stuffed with a cotton blend. One company makes a line of infant futon mattresses. There are stuffed mattresses that can be used with a bassinet or layette. When a person wants to buy a futon, they should understand the differences. Modern futons include different styles, and some of these types of futons may not be what the person is looking for. It is important to see a picture of the item or view it in person before buying it to make sure it is the type of futon that the buyer has in mind.
Why You Should Use a Daybed Mattress
When first browsing daybeds, it isn't always clear what type of mattress you should use. Can you use a futon mattress on your daybed or the twin mattress your tween outgrew when she upgraded to a full size bed? The short answer is no and yes. Because a futon mattress is designed to be folded in half, you should try to avoid using a futon mattress on your daybed, but, yes, a standard size twin mattress will fit a daybed. But if you want the ideal fit and look for your daybed, keep in mind that daybed mattresses are specifically designed for daybeds and to showoff daybed bedding to its best advantage. Types of Daybed Mattresses Daybed mattresses fall into three general categories: innersping, cotton/foam, or memory foam. Mattresses made of a cotton/foam mix will allow the mattress to breathe, while the foam helps it to keep its shape. Support, comfort and durability depend on how the materials are layered, the quality of foam and cotton used, and the thickness. The innerspring daybed mattress resembles a standard innerspring mattress. A coil system made up of 300 plus coils depending on the brand/manufacturer is cushioned between layers of cotton/foam padding. As with standard mattresses, the quality of mattress will depend on the configuration of the coils and the strength and thickness of the metal used to make them. An innerspring futon mattress will feel firmer than ones made with foam. The all foam day bed mattress is considered to be the softest and most comfortable. The foam makes them durable, as well as lighter than a cotton/foam futon. They are constructed by layering different types of foam, and can include medium density, high density, flat and convoluted or egg carton foams. Convoluted foam is commonly used in the top and bottom layers (so that it is on top when the mattress is flipped) because it helps evenly distribute the weight applied to the mattress. Foam daybed mattresses are also known for providing maximum support. Daybed Mattresses Size While daybed mattresses are available only in twin size, they are typically thinner than standard twin size mattresses. Daybed mattresses are deliberately thinner to make allowances for the daybed's distinctive back; you don't want the back so high that the unique design is obstructed from view. There's no law stating that you can't use the standard twin mattress you already have on hand; just make sure that it won't cover up the very features that attracted you to daybed in the first place. When using standard twin size mattresses instead of daybed mattresses, an individual mattress should be no higher than eight inches. Don't forget that you will also need to leave room for daybed bedding. Daybed Mattresses for Trundle Beds A trundle unit is a bed frame specifically designed to hold and store an additional mattress underneath most types of daybeds. The most common types of trundles are pop-up and pull-out. When purchasing day bed mattresses for trundles, regardless of the type you have chosen to go with your daybed, it is important to remember that the twin size day bed mattress will be stored underneath the sleeping platform of the daybed. Make sure that the daybed mattress fits comfortably on the frame and that it isn't so thick that it will become snagged on the daybed frame or the underside of the link spring.

Futons are great way to decorate your living room as they are the modern alternative to a conventional sofa-bed. Mission futon sofas are well known for their versatility, functionality and the beauty they add to the room. They are available in different sizes, designs and style, which compliment well with all kinds of living rooms. Futons have many advantages as it a furniture piece which can be used for both comfortable seating and for a good night's sleep. When buying a futon there are few considerations, the foremost being where you want to place the futon. If the answer is living room, then you need to look for a sofa bed futon which can be comfortable both during the day and night. One needs to first understand that a futon is actually a cotton padded mattress used for sleeping either on the floor or on a raised frame. After choosing the right kind of mattress, select a base frame which is convenient for folding and unfolding. For a full size futon, bi-fold frame style is the best. As the bi-fold frame utilizes the longer length of the mattress, it folds the mattress only once, providing a larger seating and sleeping space. But no matter how you sleep or sit and whether you're after a bed or a sofa, it's important that the futon sits on a slatted frame. For natural fiber mixes of the futon, wooden bases compliment it the best. Though there are metal frames also available, wood frames have more options to offer with variety in designs, color and different structures to suit your home interiors. There are futon beds with storage space options as well, which can be of good advantage to small living space. The best way to make your living room livelier is by covering the futon with attractive mattress covers. They can be further accessorized with cushions and small pillows which are great sofa bed add-ons. The covers can be easily changed when you want to use the futon as bed in the night. Its ability to easily convert itself from a sofa to bed and vice versa, makes it a good option for those looking for economical furniture and better space management. Avoid This Futon - the Black Metal Futon Frame
When the futon industry was born back in the 1980's, the frames were well thought out and well constructed. Whether it was softwoods or hardwoods, the frames featured good fundamental designs made from solid wood. These futon frames would incorporate new working mechanisms and ideas in operation that made futons appealing not only in their design but in the quality of materials and construction that went into them. The futon industry was doing well and growing with these frames heading into the 1990's but then the black metal futon frame came onto the scene. At first it was widely regarded as a great addition to the futon family of products. Finally, a futon that could be offered at a much a lower price point. Black metal frames were being imported from China, Malaysia and Taiwan. Many of the early black metal frames were packaged with an import mattress made up of ground up textile materials and a colored covering with tufts. These packages were often anywhere in price from $199 - $249 and started out in specialty futon shops as a great way to introduce customers on a budget into a lower priced futon option. It was soon discovered though that these frames were not such a bargain that they appeared to be. The first problem with black metal frames is the round metal bars that make up the seat and back sections of these frames. Where as wood futon frames are using flat slats, black metal frames have hollow round bars. Thinner mattresses would slide through the gaps between the round bars. On wood futons this was never a problem. The other issue with the hollow bars is that if enough weight was placed on a spot they would begin to bend. The issue became so bad that a 90 day warranty was put in place by most manufacturers of these frames. Another issue the black metal frames suffered from were bending stretcher bars or rails. Again the hollow nature of these strecther rails presented issues with breakage and bending. Early designs involved a steel tooth design that would fit into pocket welds on the arms. These would snap off over use. The alternative design was to run a bolt through the arms and into the rails. While better it still did not address the issue of bending stretcher rails. Bent hinges also added another issue that would happen from use over time. While not as common as the other problems this issue still led to the failure of many black metal frames. The hinges were attached to the arms of the futon frames with two bolts and two nuts. While this design was OK the hinges themselves would fail when too much weight was applied to one side or the other. These would also bend out rendering them useless in the operation of the futon. Most specialty futon retailers pay little to no attention to black metal futon frames. Retailers I've spoken to have said that the black metal futon frame is the number one service headache when it came to futons with over 95% of service issues being the failure of a black metal frame component. Replacing these parts were made more difficult by the fact the manufacturers were located overseas and obtaining the parts past the 90 day warranty period often involved the retailer having to purchase the replacement parts and charging the customer. If you're shopping for a futon, here are some things to think about if you see a black metal futon frame in a mass merchant or big box store. Consider the fact that most solid wood futon frames carry a warranty anywhere from a year to a lifetime warranty. Black metal futon frames have a 90 day warranty. It says something about how much the manufacturer stands behind the product. Black metal frames are made overseas. Expect to wait for a part if something breaks or if you're past that 90 day warranty, expect to pay for all replacement parts and associated costs to get your frame up and running again. Consider too that parts may also no longer be available should something break. Metal bars allow mattresses to slide into and through the gaps between each bar. This puts lumps in your mattress and can make the futon quite uncomfortable when compared to flat wooden slats on wood frames. Futons do make a sensible investment as they provide all of the features and benefits of a sofa sleeper but at a fraction of the cost in many cases. If you find the right frame that is well built from quality materials and a good mattress your futon experience is sure to be a positive one. Avoid metal futon frames that are made more to hit a particular price point then they are to be a piece of furniture that can offer longevity as a dependable sofa and sleeper for your home. The right futon can provide you and your family with years of quality use. The wrong futon frame will simply become disposable furniture.
What Makes a Quality Futon Frame?
Choosing a quality futon frame can be quite a challenge. Often good qualty frames are hard to find. This article about futon furniture hopes to shed some light on things to avoid and things to look for in a quality wood futon frame. Having worked in furniture for many years I've seen a lot of things in terms of quality of construction and materials used both good and bad. The futon furniture industry has been no different. There are manufacturers using materials and construction techniques that impress me though and in this first article I hope to explain to you the reader why I think this manufacturer's futon frame products are worth your consideration. About 15 years ago a furniture store I worked in picked up a line of futon products under the name August Lotz. This manufacturer was based in Wisconsin and had an interesting approach to the futon design. Part of that design was in the creation of how they built the seat and back sections to these futon frames which set them apart from everyone else. Several manufacturers of futon frames around this time period typically connected the slats that were in the backrest and seat rest to the outer frame by using staple guns that drove staples through the slats into the frame or used nails to do this. The problem this created was that when one side of the frame was being closed over time, the slats worked themselves loose and fell out or caused a failure during operation that broke the ends of the frame. Other manufacturers would try dowel and glue systems by trying to dowel the slats up into the frame work. This system was a little better than the staples or nails but all too often these slats would again work themselves loose over time and would cause failure in the frame. In fact I'd go so far as saying these products gave futons a bad name unjustly. I won't even bring up imported metal frames which are the service headache of most futon stores. The futon frames I've mentioned above were all too commonly sold in the big box stores much to the disappointment of those who purchased them who thought a futon should be more. The August Lotz approach to frame construction was unique though and is a good example of what a futon frame should be. They created a system of slat grids where the slats were incorporated into a grid section that would slide into an English dovetail joint within the outer frame work. The ends of the frames had end caps mounted and the frames were complete. This interlocking of parts made them highly resistant to damage and misuse and Lotz felt so confident in this design that a limited lifetime warranty was applied to these futon frames. The design they created did not go un-noticed as Consumers Digest awarded them a Best Buy award for premium futon frames. What is most impressive though is that this approach is a much higher end way of making a piece of furniture and August Lotz accomplishes this in the design and materials used in their frames. It's too bad consumers who purchased the big box frames never had a chance to see the quality or construction of an August Lotz frame. I'm sure they would been quite pleased by the quality and craftsmanship of this furniture and avoided the disappointment of lower end frames. August Lotz also developed a simple mechanism to allow for front operation of their frames. They weren't the first to develop this feature but what they offer allows the frame to be converted without weight being placed in the wrong places and converted the frame correctly. Replaceable arm tops is also something unique as the tops of the arms use steel brackets and screws to mount the tops down. Over time these can be serviced and replaced. Manufacturers of futons don't make frames like this by thinking ahead August Lotz gives us another reason to consider their products. Ash wood was originally offered as the primary wood for these frames but Lotz has since moved to Oak which is just as strong and durable as the Ash wood they once offered. Finishes offered are Medium in all styles and English Oak in select arm styles. Matching coffee, end and sofa tables are also available as are loveseats and chairs to match the futon sofas giving you an entire room of matching furniture. This article was designed to show you the reader that futon frames can be made with quality construction techniques , quality materials and a commitment to a product above and beyond what most manufacturers would take time to do for their customers. These reasons in my opinion make August Lotz your first choice for a quality futon frame for your home. In my next article we'll explore futon mattresses and what you should look for and what you should avoid in the most important part of your futon.
